Laszlo Nemes Narrates a Scene From ‘Son of Saul’

It isn’t immediately clear who he is, or where we are. But over the course of the opening sequence of this harrowing Holocaust drama, much is understood.
The film is the feature debut of the Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes. It premiered last May at the Cannes Film Festival and has been racking up accolades over this awards season, including a Golden Globe for best foreign language film and an Oscar nomination in the same category.

The film tells the story of a Jewish inmate at a concentration camp who is part of a team of prisoners responsible for shepherding others their deaths. The story is told almost completely in close-up, with the camera rarely leaving the face of its protagonist.
